Skye Fisher Interview

Skye Fisher is one of my favorite people in the fitness industry. She is obviously incredibly beautiful, but she is also an amazing performer, and a good genuine person. If you are someone who publishes magazine on fitness, Skye is everything you would want to be part of the magazine. She is beautiful, so it is going to attract readers, she is a big part of the industry, she that is going to attract readers, she has an incredible body, so that is going to attract readers to try and found out she achieved it, and she is popular with fans of the industry so that is going to get your readers. If you are a sponsor, she is the exact type of woman who you want to promote your product. She looks great, works hard to look great, and is so charismatic and outgoing. Please red this interview, and if you don not know Skye, you will know why I think so highly of this amazing woman.

Q: First, Skye, I want to thank you for doing this. You are an inspiration to me and many others.

Q: Start out by telling a little about yourself. Family, where you are from, things like that.
A: I am from Lowell, Michigan, a small tow near Grand Rapids. I work for Job Corps in Grand Rapids, where we help at risk teenagers get their high school diploma or GED, and we also teach them one of the trades. We then help them find a job to get them out in the working world on their own.

Q: Now, I know in highs school you were active in sports and cheerleading. Can you share what all you did and what was your favorite.
A: In high school I was a cheerleader, gymnast, and I also did track and field. My favorite sport was always gymnastics. Gymnastics has become a great part of my fitness career. I use it all the time, which I am thankful for all the private lessons my mom bought me.

Q: Were you always active as a kid, even before high school?
A: I started doing gymnastics and dance at a young age, I think 5. I continued that all through high school and into college.

Q: After high school you went to Central Michigan. Why there, and what was your major topic of study?
A: I went to Central Michigan because of their teaching program, which I didn't end up doing. When I got there, I soon learned I love journalism and photography along with sports. I quickly became a photographer for the University paper and travelled with the football team to cover them. I enjoyed doing a weekly written preview for the basketball team as well as many other variety of articles. I graduated with a degree in Photojournalism and a minor in sport studies with a Coaching endorsement.

Q: One thing I find amazing, is that you ran a race and did over 26 miles while twisting an ankle. Can you share anything about that?
A: I ran the Chicago Marathon back in 2005 to raise money by pledges for my little cousin who has lymphoma Cancer. Yes, I sprained my ankle at little more then half way through, but all I could think about was my cousin and finishing for her. In the midst of the ankle sprain I met a runner who was an angel I swear, who told me to come on, I will do this with you. He ran till the end encouraging me along the way. He had seen my cousins picture on the front of my running tank, with her bald head. In my mind my cousin had been trough worse and just doing it for her was important.

Q: So what led you to getting into the gym and training?
A: After the ankle in Chicago I was not willing to run that far anymore. I had someone at the local gym I worked at tell me I should try to do a bodybuilding competition. He said he would train me for a very little. So I began my quest in a short 9 weeks to my friend, bodybuilding.

Q: Why did you go more toward fitness than bodybuilding?
A: I knew in the beginning I wanted to do fitness. They just didn't have it at my first two competitions back in 2006. So i stuck to bodybuilding for that year. Gymnastics and performing was my passion, so I knew I needed to be in fitness.

Q: I have seen instance where a beautiful woman like you comes to the gym and she isn't taken seriously at first. Did you ever feel like you had to prove yourself at all?
A: I don't feel I have ever had to prove myself to anyone other than myself. I am constantly my own worst critique. As for people at the gym, they know I am not kidding when I show up in my dew rag and my hard core tank top. :)

Q: At what point did you decide to compete, and what made you decide it?
A: I decided to compete in 2006, but I knew after that I would be doing fitness in 2007. Once I met with Melissa Frabbriele who is a fitness and figure pro in Michigan, I was in love with fitness. She did my first routine.

Q; Can you share your contest history.
A: *2009 Nationals- Figure A class- 16th
*2009 NPC Jr. Nationals- Fitness Short Class- 4th
*2009 NPC Arnold Amateur-Fitness Short CLass- 6th
*2008 NPC Jr. Nationals (debut)- Fitness Short Class- 6th
*2007 NPC Michigan- Fitness Short Class- 1st and overall Champion
*2007 NPC Michigan- Figure Short Class- 3rd
*2007 NPC Jr. Michigan- Fitness- 1st and Overall Champion
*2007 NPC Grand Rapids Fitness- 1st and Overall Champion
*2007 NPC Grand Rapids- Figure Short Class- 2nd
*2006 NPC Capital City- Bodybuilding Ligh Weight-2nd
*2006 Belding Natural Classic- Bodybuilding- 1st and Overall Champion

Q: Was your first contest what you expected or did anything surprise you?
A: My first contest was amazing because it was actually bodybuilding and I got 2nd in an NPC National Qualifier. I guess I never expected to get a top 2

Q: Is there anything you have learned about yourself from competing?
A: I have learned a lot from competing. I learned that being patient and always friendly gets you farther then some who don't act very nice. I think that over the years I see more and more athletes who think they are better then others and treat people not how they should. In my mind, it's not professional in life to act like that. Being kind to others as you want them to be to you. I always get so excited to see other girls win, who have hearts of gold, because they are the true athletes.

Q: Are there any other athletes in the sport you look up to or admire?
A: There are many great athletes that I look up to. Mandy Polk, who did my routine last year. Sandi Stuart, who is a great athlete and friend. Stefanie Irick is a good friend and Jen Hendershot is always one who I strive to be like, her routines are amazing. I have many friends who I look to and look up to. Tracy Dawn Winters, Paula Williams Gualman, Rachel Patton, and many more.

Q: When someone tells you that you are an inspiration to them, what does that mean to you?
A: Being an inspiration to anyone touches me heart. I sometimes struggle to why I do this, begin a single mom and with no ones financial help. When I hear someone say they look up to me, it makes my day and helps drive me to keep going. I love this sport, and helping others is my passion. I love giving advice to help those newer competitors.

Q: Do you have a favorite bodypart or part you get the most compliments on?
A: I get many compliments on my abs. It seems that everyone asks me how to get them. All I have to say is, I don't work them out much and gymnastics since 5 is the whole reason I have them. :)

Q: Do you have a favorite part to train or favorite exercise?
A: My favorite part to train is my shoulders. At one time they were small but now they are big because I love training them/

Q: Can you share your normal training routine and diet for both off season and contest prep.
A: My normal training varies with my work schedule, which is hectic. I train at least 6 days a week. off season is maybe 5 days. I eat a fun diet in off season, but still stick to high protein. When I am in season, I am nothing but strict and use a keto diet for prep. I have a diet coach who uses a lot Of Dave Palumbo's diet to get me lean.

Q: When people see your physique for the first time, what is the common response? More negative or positive?
A: I get nothing but positive comments and people say they want a physique like mine.

Q: When they see it that first time, what is the one question you are sick of hearing?
A: "How do you get abs, can I just do sit ups?" They don't understand it really has to do with dieting.

Q: What is your favorite and least favorite part of competing?
A: My favorite is the adrenaline rush on stage and performing. The worst is packing for the show when you can't think. LOL

Q; Now, you also do modeling. What do you enjoy about that?
A: I enjoy all the photos shoots. I would love to have that chance just one time to be in one of the big magazines.

Q: If anyone wanted to book you for a shoot, what is the best way to contact you?
A: The best way to get ahold of me is to go to www.skyefisher.com or find me on Facebook. I check them both often.

Q: If someone were to come up to you and say they wanted to start training, what is the one piece of advice you would want to give them?
A: To stay positive and make a goal. Goals drive people to do well in weight training, even if it's just to loose a pound.

Q: Is competing something your family and friends supported at the start, and how about now.
A: My family is not very supportive of the sport, but they deal with it. My friends are my support system and help keep my head focused when preping. My daughter is always on me about food even in the off season, asking if I should be eating that or not. It's pretty cute. My mom was my biggest supporter, but she passed away after my 2008 National debut from cancer. I dedicated my routine to her and cancer survivors in 2009. Those are the people who give me strength, because what I am going through can't possibly be anything close to what I saw my Mom go through.

Q: What is the biggest misconception about women who weight train?
A: The biggest misconception is that we look and sound like guys. So many people here say you're a bodybuilder, and they assume things. We can stay feminine.

Q: What is your biggest personal achievement so far?
A: My biggest achievement is getting 4th at Jr. Nationals. It's one step closer to 1st. :)

Q: Do you have a favorite cheat food?
A: My favorite cheat food is cheesecake and pizza. Yummy! I also like sugar free iced non-fat lattes from Starbucks!

Q: Favorite actors, movies, TV shows, and musicians.
A: For actors it would be the ones in Twilight. I could watch the Twilight movies over and over. Not a big TV fan, so I could go without. Musicians, I would have to say Gucci Mane and Lady GaGa.

Q: Describe Skye Fisher in three words.
A: Passionate, Caring, and Driven.

Q: You also do personal training. What are the benefits of being trained by Skye Fisher, and how can people who want to be trained by you contact you?
A: The benefits of being trained by me is I will be with you till the end and even after. I usually spend quality time with my clients and make sure they feel good about their training. I will never leave them hanging. I also make sure they are making progress, and aren't just paying me for the same results each week. I want them to learn on their own so eventually they don't need me. People can check out my website to get ahold of me. www.skyefisher.com

Q: Anything else going on that you want to promote.
A: I will be guest posing in March at the John Sherman Classic and they will be giving money to charity of choice. I am very excited to be a part of that. Also, please check out my sponsors new supplement link at www.musclemafiacrew.com

Q: In this sport you need sponsors. Are you looking for any?
A: O am sponsored by Muscle Mafia, owned by Dave Meek. I am looking for a booth to work at the Arnold though. I am hoping someone will pick me up.

Q: Any definite plans for 2010 as far as competing or any other projects.
A: 2010 is up in the air kind of, but I will be guest posing and plan to be at the Arnold. I am also going to start practice judging in Michigan s that's exciting. I am going to be working with Sandi Stuart on my routine for either Jr. Nationals or Jr. USA, but definitely Team Universe this year. I have a busy schedule, but look forward to it. I also have a new physique surprise out there for those out there that don't know :) I am very excited about that.

Q: Skye, again, thank you for doing this. It was an honor. You are a personal favorite of mine and I Think there is no end to how far you can go in the industry. Any last words before you go?
A: Thank you Jason for letting me be a part of this. I really enjoy anything I can do in the industry, as fitness and weight training will always be a part of my life. Good luck to you and all your new endeavours. Hugs.
